Over 35 years former Ford and Chrysler boss Lee Iacocca had three Time Magazine covers. All of them made reference to him as the father of the Mustang and later the father of the minivan.

The problem is it’s not true.

As Motor Trend journalist Gary Witzenburg wrote earlier this year, ‘Automotive Hall of Fame member Harold K. “Hal” Sperlich may be the most influential auto executive you barely know. He created Detroit’s sport compact ponycar class with Ford’s 1964 Mustang, then two decades later launched the minivan at Chrysler. Both times, boss Lee Iacocca took most of the credit.’
