Five reasons to hold off on buying an EV in Australia

1. They depreciate faster than a new iPhone. The Tesla Model Y has shed more than $25,000 in two years. BYD and MG owners are seeing similar pain.

2. The charging network is more wishful thinking than reality. 3700 public chargers versus 6600 fuel stations. Many are broken.

3. Batteries: the $20k elephant in the garage. A replacement battery costs between $8000 and $22000. Warranties only kick in if capacity drops below 70 per cent.

4. Government rebates? Gone. Every state has killed them. Over ten years, tax benefits will cost Australian taxpayers $23.4bn.

5. Next year's models will make this year's look like a Nokia 3310. Battery prices fell 14 per cent last year alone. Solid-state batteries are on the way.
