There’s not a lot to do in Mitandersfors in Sweden except drive the 260kw BMW M3 rally car around the ice track sideways, occasionally sticking it into the snow so badly that the truck has to tow you out and you feel like a complete tool.

Thankfully Ice Driver (www.icedriver.com) owner and instructor Andy McKenna doesn’t add to your misery. This is just as well because he was sitting next to me every time I decided to cool the BMW or Porsche down. Andy runs the winter (duh!) ice driving courses from a property owned by 2003 World Rally Champion Petter Solberg. In fact Petter owns the hotel we stayed in that is said to have been the base for the King of Norway and the Norwegian resistance during World War 11.

I don’t remember seeing Carl (as we used to call him then) there during the forties but the rooms are a lot better now, the food is top local reindeer meatballs and the huge range of grog is on the honour system (big mistake).
